Tips for Screen Reader Users
How RoSPA web pages look
The first link on the RoSPA home page is to this page. The home page has links to all of the main areas of the web site. In addition, a set of quick links will take you to all sections of the site. The site search is first in the tabindex and will give you access to all site content.
All other pages on the web site have the same 'look and feel'. Here’s how they look from top to bottom:
The top of the page contains the RoSPA logo, which you can always click to return to the home page, and the site essentials - Home Page, Contact Us, Site Map, A to Z Index and the Search facility.
There is a second level of navigation at the base of the top banner taking you to the six main sections of the site: About RoSPA, Safety Areas, Training & Consultancy, Join RoSPA, Resources and News and Events.
Below this, the page splits into two areas:
1. The left-hand (Navigation) area contains section-specific navigation down the left-hand side of the page which will take you to the main sub-sections and pages of that part of the RoSPA website. In addition there is a drop-down list of Quick Links at the top of the left-hand navigation which will take you to all main sections and pages of the site.
2. The main area (Content) is where you’ll find the text of the page you’ve browsed to.
For example, if you browse to the Road Safety homepage:
1. The Navigation area will contain Road Safety-related menu items like: Press Releases, Advice & Information and Conferences.
2. The Content area will show Road Safety content.
Navigating the site
We’ve built in a few 'signposts' to help you find your way around the page if you’re a screenreader user. Here are some links you’ll find at the top of the page and where they’ll take you to:
Jump to Main Content - skips past all navigation to the main text on the page
Jump to Navigation - jumps to the top of the Navigation area
Jump to Search - jumps to the search facility
Searching the site
The search area is also context-sensitive - if you’re on the RoSPA home page and all sub-pages it’ll contain a label that says “search”, an edit box for you to enter the words you want to search for, and a Go button.
If you browse to a sub-section home page, there’ll also be a drop down menu to allow you to narrow your search. For example, if you’re on the Road Safety sub-section home page, the options will be to search “Road Safety ” and “All of RoSPA ”.
