I had known John since he joined RoSPA all those years ago. He was a kind and loving man who always had a word for everyone. On his first visit to Northern Ireland he enjoyed meeting so many volunteer members of the Home Safety movement.

We in Home Accident Prevention Northern Ireland are saddened to hear of John’s untimely passing. We share with everyone else our sympathy at this time.

We will miss him; his passing will be a great loss to the safety movement.

I received the news of John Howard's death with great shock. I found it hard to believe that John has left this side of eternity because the planning committee of the 2nd African Road Safety Congress (Lagos, Nigeria 2006) was planning to invite John as our Guest speaker.

On behalf of the Safety Vanguards of Safety Alliance and the entire road safety crusaders in Nigeria, I wish to offer our sincere condolence to the family of John Howard and RoSPA on the sudden home calling of John Howard - the shinning star of accident prevention. His death is an irreparable loss, but we take solace in the knowledge that John has reproduced himself in the ROSPA workforce and many of us as his admirers.

Isaiah Ogacheko
Project Manager,

Reading the many messages concerning John just confirms that we have all lost a very good man that made a difference to our working lives and RoSPA as an organisation.

Working with John was always a pleasure because of his endless enthusiasm for Safety and for RoSPA. That enthusiasm and professionalism clearly has affected us all and I too will greatly miss a remarkable man.

John shared my own enthusiasm for sailing and I know he enjoyed many hours at sea.

Phil Hughes MBE
Director and Trustee of RoSPA

We received the news of the sudden departure of John through an e-mail from Roadsafe a few days ago. It was very shocking and hard to believe.

John was a safety enthusiast and crusader with awesome energy and passion for the promotion of safety not only in the U.K, but in the whole world. Even though we were never able to meet in person before his demise, we exchanged e-mails on several occasions and we eventually sent him an authographed copy of our book "Reducing Road Accidents".

We will not forget in a hurry John's deep humility and words of encouragement to the Safety Alliance Family. We fervently pray that the Almighty God will grant the RoSPA family and the people of the United Kingdom the fortitude to bear this great loss.

Adieu dear John Howard.

Olanrewaju Lawrence Osho
Executive Director,

I am deeply shocked and saddened by the news of John's untimely death.

I left RoSPA in December 1999 after 11 happy years there. Although never having worked with John directly, my perception of him as a true gentleman has been confirmed by all the messages of condolences I have read to date.

John was that rare commodity, a genuine, thoroughly decent man and will be greatly missed.

It was with deepest sadness and shock that the Executive Committee for the Road Safety Council of Northern Ireland heard about the death of John Howard.

John had worked with the Council over many years, his professionalism and commitment always unquestionable, especially in more recent years as the Council has developed its own responsibilities in the realm of Road Safety here in Northern Ireland.

Please pass on the Council’s most sincere condolences to his family and colleagues. John will be greatly missed from the global community of Road Safety and the many other aspects of his role as Chief Executive of RoSPA.

The Council of the Irish Water Safety Association have requested that I write to offer our sincerest condolences on the passing of John Howard.

It was with enormous shock and sadness that we learned of John’s untimely passing. He was always very friendly towards us and very helpful and supportive of the objectives of our Association. On behalf of our members, I wish to offer our sincerest condolences to his family and friends. We shall all miss his charm, energy, example and leadership. It would be difficult to estimate the lives he has saved promoting safety.

Over the five years that I have spent in this appointment I found John to be a source of great energy and inspiration for promoting water safety. I met him on a number of occasions and he was always friendly, co-operative and supportive of the work that we were doing in Ireland. He was always generous in terms of sharing information, strategies and solutions. He had a good sense of humour and was a great diplomat for RoSPA and the UK.

We shall all miss him and we share in RoSPA’s loss of a man who has achieved so much at promoting safety.

John will be sadly missed by all of us who were involved with him over the years. John was a great supporter and generous 'benefactor' in relation to the SAPC Home, Water and Road Safety Committees. I recall going to London for the first time many years ago to represent the SAPC at the NRSC meeting at the then DETR, John took the trouble to take me to Downing Street, Whitehall and Houses of Parliament when the meeting was finished. I am sure John was probably in a rush to get home, however he took the time to show me around, a real gentleman who always had time for everyone.

Bill Smith
Chair of Scottish Accident Prevention Council

It was with deep sadness that we learned of the recent death of John Howard. John will be remembered by us all as a tireless campaigner in the field of home safety and, in his more recent roles at RoSPA, keeping the organisation at the forefront of the safety field as a whole. As well as being the public face of RoSPA both at home and abroad, I know that a great deal of work went on in the background with a variety of Government departments in the seemingly endless struggle to persuade them to give safety and injury prevention the priority it deserves.

On a personal note, I remember meeting John for the first time as a “rookie” at my first home safety congress in 1986, and the support he gave in later years during my time as Chairman of the National Home and Leisure Safety Committee and member of the Executive Committee. John was always encouraging and supportive and always interested to hear how things were going at a local level.

The Institute highly values the links that it has built up with RoSPA, and John played a key role in encouraging the development of these links over the years. He will be sadly missed and I would be grateful if you would pass on our condolences to all at RoSPA and our best wishes at this difficult time.

As Chair of the Safety Education Committee, I’m sure that I write on behalf of the whole membership in expressing sorrow at this news. John always gave great support to the committee with his energising presence and invariable good humour. I have no doubt that the committee will continue its efforts to further the enormous contribution to safety that John made.

John was a well-known figure amongst local authorities throughout the country and I should also include the condolences of the London Borough of Hounslow.

And I would like to express my personal sorrow at John’s death. He was a kind and encouraging person and an excellent colleague who will be widely missed.

Chair of National Safety Education Committee

I first became a RoSPA committee member in 1982 and I clearly remember John being introduced to the members of the then Home and Leisure Safety Committee at a meeting in the Birmingham City Council Chamber. In the intervening years I got to know John quite well. I liked him a lot.

He was a man of so many skills. He was a very good businessman who could combine charm and diplomacy with a touch of ruthlessness where this was appropriate.

He is a man who will be very sadly missed, both by RoSPA and by his friends and family.

Michael Evans
Member and Past Chairman National Safety Education Committee

I was very saddened to hear the news of the sudden death of John Howard.

I have been aware of and admire John’s long-standing commitment and dedication to safety matters. His work and achievements in this important field will be greatly missed.

Safety and injury prevention are concerns that touch us all, from the home to the roads and the workplace, and John Howard’s experience and influence extended across the many different boundaries of responsibility and legislation.

From the perspective of the Fire and Rescue Service, we will miss equally his support for the wider accident prevention agenda, and for the work of the National Community Fire Safety Centre. I know that, since its inception, the Centre has valued its relationship with RoSPA and the personal support which John provided. I’m pleased to say that this relationship continues with the Centre’s membership of the Home and Leisure Safety Committee.

On behalf of HM Fire Services Inspectorate, and the UK Fire and Rescue Services, I would like to pass on our sympathy and condolences to John’s family, and to all the Trustees and Staff at RoSPA.

Sir Graham Meldrum
Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Fire Services

We were very shocked to hear of the unexpected death of John Howard.

John was a courteous and charming man who was a credit to the Society and to the safety movement. Our representative to the RoSPA National Road Safety Committee, Howard Boyd, has known John for 20 years and had a high regard for John’s integrity, his commitment to RoSPA’s work and his wise contributions to committee discussions.

Please convey our warm wishes to John’s family on behalf of us all at CTC.
