MORR - Managing Occupational Road Risk

Why? The Facts

The Department for Transport have recently published their 2006 Transport Statistics with the following findings:

  • There were 258,404 reported casualties on the roads in Great Britain in 2006
  • 3,172 people were killed, which is the equivalent of 9 people per day
  • 28,673 people were seriously injured
  • 226,559 people were slightly injured
  • There were 169 Child fatalities, and 3,125 were seriously injured
  • There were 30,982 pedestrian casualties in 2006, 675 of which were killed on the road, and 6,376 were seriously injured
  • 95% of all accidents are attributable to human error alone
  • There were 10,800 insurance claims made per day
  • Employers have moral as well as legal duties to assess these risks and take ‘reasonably practicable measures’ to ensure ‘safe systems of work’ for their drivers.
  • Companies which take action to promote the safety of their staff while driving can reduce accident costs, make efficiency savings, improve their image (a company’s drivers are its ambassadors on the road!) and make a significant contribution to meeting UK road safety targets.
