NEW PRESIDENT FOR RoSPA

Lord Davies of Oldham is the new President of The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents.

He was elected at the Society’s annual meeting in Birmingham today, and succeeds Lord Astor of Hever in the post.

Earlier this year Lord Davies introduced a Bill in the House of Lords calling for a ban on the use of hand-held mobile phones while driving.

Lord Davies is currently chairman of the Further Education Funding Council. He lives in Broxbourne, Hertfordshire.

Lord Davies worked as a teacher before becoming a lecturer at Middlesex Polytechnic, and moved into politics as MP for Enfield North in 1974.

He was the secretary to the Parliamentary Labour Party between 1979 and 1992, before becoming MP for Oldham Central and Royton in 1992. He later became the opposition spokesman on Education and Employment.
