RoSPA Press Office : Press ReleaseJanuary 28, 2008 A host of nationally recognised speakers has been announced for a prestigious leadership conference run by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents. Lord McKenzie of Luton, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department for Work and Pensions, will give the keynote address at the Developing Leadership Action event in May. The conference will cover key developments that have focused attention on the health and safety responsibilities of directors and senior managers, including the Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act (coming into force on April 6) and the clear and authoritative guidelines issued by the Health and Safety Commission (HSC) and Institute of Directors. It will provide a valuable opportunity for organisations to gain an understanding of the strategic importance and business benefits of better health and safety management, to assess their board’s engagement in accident and ill-health prevention strategies and to look ahead to continuous improvement. Judith Hackitt, Chair of the HSC, will talk about “health and safety leadership and the effective organisation”, and Michael Parker, Group Chief Executive of BNFL (British Nuclear Fuels), will give a personal view of how he leads. Also speaking will be Roger Bibbings, RoSPA’s Occupational Safety Adviser, and Gerard Forlin, a barrister and leading authority on health and safety and the law. Case studies will be provided by Neil Lennox, Group Head of Health, Safety and Fire at Sainsbury’s, Richard Smith, Director of Service Policy and Planning at Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service, and Susan Elston, Managing Director of Aramark Offshore Limited. The conference, running in association with the Health and Safety Executive, will be held on Tuesday, May 13, in the Concourse Suite at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham, alongside Safety & Health Expo. Tom Mullarkey, RoSPA’s Chief Executive, who will chair the conference, said: “We are highly privileged to have the support of three of the most notable figures involved in workplace safety in the UK. “The combination of the Government's perspective from Lord McKenzie, the HSC's view from Judith Hackitt and the approach of a Chief Executive from the UK's most safety-sensitive industry, Mike Parker, is simply unbeatable.” Chief executives, directors and senior managers, company secretaries, risk and insurance managers, and health and safety professionals and representatives are among those expected to attend the Developing Leadership Action conference.
