TRANT TOPS LIST OF RoSPA’S 1,500 SAFETY WINNERS

Trant Construction Limited from Southampton has won RoSPA’s top occupational health and safety award, the Sir George Earle Trophy.

There were a record 1,500 award winners this year, but the judges chose Trant Construction for the premier prize after hearing how a strong health and safety ethos, led from board level, had been successful not only in preventing accidents and health damage, but in ensuring the commercial success of a growing family-owned business.

The company was praised by the panel for: hands-on health and safety leadership by all Trant’s directors and senior managers; a practical approach to training and briefing; disciplined use of point-of-work risk assessments; the involvement of employees in reporting and solving problems; eagerness to learn from accidents and incidents; creative approaches to occupational health and well-being; and the induction, training and supervision of migrant workers.

Other major award winners included: The RoSPA Training Trophy – GE Healthcare - The Grove Centre, Amersham; the Astor Trophy for the best-managed occupational health programme – AWE plc, Reading; International Dilmun Environmental Award, sponsored by Gulf Petrochemical Industries Company of Bahrain – AWE plc, Reading; RoSPA Managing Occupational Road Risk Trophy – ScottishPower Fleet Business; Worker Involvement in Safety and Health Trophy, sponsored by Springfields Fuels Ltd – Royal Mail Group, Swindon.

Sector award winners were: Chemical – Gulf Petrochemical Industries Company, Bahrain; Commercial and Business Services – Reliance Security Services Ltd, Oldbury; Construction Commercial – Trant Construction Limited; Housebuilding and Property Development – Frank Haslam Milan NE Ltd, Sunderland; Education and Training – TTE Training Limited, Ellesmere Port; Electricity – International Power Global Development Ltd Hub Power Station Pakistan; Engineering Services – GE Transportation, Welwyn Garden City; Engineering Construction – Magnox Electric, a subsidiary of EnergySolutions, Gloucestershire; Facilities Management – Interserve FM Ltd, West Bromwich; Food, Drink and Tobacco Manufacturing – Devro (Scotland) Limited, Glasgow; Forestry – Hortech Ltd, Stone; Healthcare Services – North Staffordshire Combined Healthcare NHS Trust, Stoke on Trent; Hotel and Catering – Aramark Ltd – Offshore, Dyce; Manufacturing – Springfields Fuels Limited, Preston; Mining and Quarrying – Imerys Minerals Limited – Trebal Refiner, Cornwall; National Defence – AWE plc, Reading; Oil and Gas – Expro International Group plc, Dyce; Public Service and Local Government – Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service; Research and Development – Nexia Solutions Ltd, Cumbria; and Transport, Storage and Distribution – Serco Docklands, London.

Organisations compete for the sector awards and specialist trophies, but there are also achievement awards at merit, bronze, silver, gold, gold medal, president’s and order of distinction levels.

The awards, sponsored by NEBOSH, were presented over three days (May 13-15) of gala dinners and ceremonies at the Birmingham Hilton Metropole Hotel, at the NEC, attended by nearly 3,000 people.
