RoADTest : RoSPA Occupational Advanced Driving Test

Introduction to the RoADTest

ROADTestWelcome to RoADTest, the RoSPA Occupational Advanced Driving Test, a unique driving and BTEC accredited qualification jointly developed and delivered by both RoSPA and DriveTech (UK) Limited. This purposely designed training programme is aimed at occupational drivers driving on company business and sets the benchmark standard for ‘at work’ driving whether it be in a car or light commercial vehicle.

The programme tackles the real risks of driving by providing those drivers on company business with the knowledge and information to help avoid being part of the annual grim accident statistics. Not only will this programme help drivers during their work, it will also extend far reaching safety benefits to their family and friends as the new skills developed in this programme become part of a drivers everyday driving style.

Employers will also see additional benefits with reduced accident and incident claims, improved fuel economy, reduced wear and tear on vehicles, better trained and motivated staff, an evolving safety culture within the organisation and an ideal solution to any organisations health & safety policy.

The risks occupational drivers face today are quite real. On average, over 3000 people are killed on our roads every year. Latest research suggests that a third of all fatalities involve those individuals driving as part of their work. Statistically, a car driver will have a 1:200 chance of being killed in a road traffic collision during a lifetime of driving and if you drive a commercial vehicle, then your risks increase substantially to 1:145. An advanced driver is proven to reduce tie risk of a collision by 25%.

If you take the time to think about it, these statistics are not surprising. Driving demands the utmost concentration and our ability to maintain the correct degree of concentration is challenging. The pressures of modern life are increasing and the demands at work affect us all. Despite new technology aimed at making our lives easier e.g. satellite navigation, mobile phone and traffic flow forecasting, the stresses of reaching a destination on time or performing at your peak at your next meeting all saps our ability to focus on driving.

The new found skills gained throughout this programme will help provide drivers with additional safety margins so in the event of an emergency situation occurring, we have additional time and space to deal with the situation. The perfect driver does not exist but by deploying tried and tested techniques, safety margins will increase at little, if any expense to journey time. In fact, in some instances journey times will be improved through better planning and observation of traffic conditions ahead.
