A New Challenge - Hazard Perception

Hazard Perception ChallengeRoSPA is pleased to introduce the Hazard Perception Challenge to the portfolio of MORR (Management of Occupational Road Risk) and driver education products and services. It is designed to enhance scanning and awareness skills in drivers.

Launched today (Nov 1st), the Hazard Perception Challenge is made up of a series of short video clips, which show real life driving and riding situations and examples of hazards on the road.

The task for the users is to test their ability to recognise these hazards and use the tool to learn from unsuccessful attempts.

The Hazard Perception Challenge is an excellent tool, which can reduce the risk that your employees face when driving for work. In addition, it can be used in preparation for anyone revising for his or her Learner Driver theory test.

With over 250,000 reported casualties on our roads each year, the management of occupational road risk is more important than ever.

To find out more information on the Hazard Perception Challenge, please contact Jayne Atkinson on 0121 248 2084 or email jatkinson@rospa.com

Managing Workplace Transport Risks - A matter of life and death

RoSPA and HSE briefing: Managing Workplace Transport Risks

In partnership with HSE

Workplace transport is the second largest cause of accidents in the workplace. Each year approximately 70 people are killed and 2000 seriously injured in accidents involving vehicles in and around workplaces.

In addition there are around 5000 injuries that cause people to be off work for more than three days.

RoSPA has developed a briefing, which will take place on 3rd December at the RoSPA Training Centre in Birmingham. It covers the HSE injuries reduction programme, the ‘Route Map’ tool as well as issues that inspectors look for, such as driver competence and site layout.

Choosing effective training

Delegate- centred courseAs the demand for quality and more specific training courses grows, RoSPA has utilised its resources and experienced staff to offer training courses with added value.

RoSPA’s in-company training caters for the health and safety training needs within organisations. The benefits of in-company training are:

  • In-company options are particularly cost-effective for organisations wanting a number of employees to undertake the same training.
  • Training can be tailored to meet the unique needs of individual organisations.
  • Such a bespoke approach can greatly enhance how the training is received and its application after the trainers have gone.

Many training providers may claim to have the expertise to tailor training courses to companies, yet only when they have the experience and breadth of knowledge that RoSPA has, can they truly create bespoke in-company training, which produces real results.

The ability to match training to individual business issues is a skill in which RoSPA excels, having experienced staff and resources.

New course for Waste Management and Recycling

In-company trainingWe would like to introduce you to our new in-company training course, ‘Safety Essentials’ in Waste Management and Recycling.

This is an interactive in-company training course that ensures that delegates can contribute to improvements in health and safety performance when they have finished the course. It covers the following key areas and relates to the primary causes of accidents in this industry:

  • Slips, Trips and Falls
  • Manual Handling
  • Personal Protective Equipment
  • Workplace Transport
  • Legislation and Responsibilities
  • Risk Assessment and Risk Control

Far from being theoretical, this is a delegate-centred course, tailored to meet your specific requirements. Tutor-led discussions, supported by syndicate exercises, facilitate the exploration of the above topics.

There is also scope to incorporate an on-site risk assessment within this programme.

The facts speak volumes:

FACT: There are currently around 162,500 people employed in the waste management industry.

FACT: The number of fatal incidents in the waste management industry is over ten times the national average.

FACT: Accident rates are four times the national average.

RoSPA’s in-company training can be the solution to improved health and safety. We employ a number of consultants with extensive experience of the waste and recycling industries, who can also undertake site-based observations and provide feedback on necessary remedial measures.

National Stress Awareness Day - 7th November

National Stress Awareness Day 2007 - 7th NovemberNational Stress Awareness Day is an annual event organized by the International Stress Management Association.

The campaign aims to present a more positive, proactive and manageable approach to stress management. There are many causes of stress and when these build up they undermine our natural ability to cope, leaving us tired, and anxious, irritable and making stress more infectious.

Why not use this opportunity to demonstrate to your staff your commitment to tackling this widespread problem?

Here at RoSPA we offer training courses around this area, in particular Managing Stress and Violence. Not only do negative effects of stress cost the UK an estimated £3.7 billion a year; the HSE also requires that employers conduct risk assessments for all hazards, including work related stress.

This one-day course, aims to empower managers to tackle the root causes of stress, including the role played by actual or threatened violence in the workplace. It adopts a risk assessment approach, with an emphasis on tackling stress and violence within existing health and safety management systems.
