‘Killer’ Lighters Banned From Sale |
After much campaigning, RoSPA was overjoyed when the European Union announced that it is to ban the sale of cigarette lighters that are not child resistant. The decision is likely to save 20 lives and 1,200 fires a year across the EU caused by children playing with cheap lighters, and save five lives and 220 injuries each year in the UK.

Awards Recognise High Performers |

In its Golden Jubilee year, more than 1,300 entrants in RoSPA’s Occupational Health and Safety Awards improved or maintained their health and safety performance and provided positive role models for other organisations to follow.

Improving Driving and Riding Standards |
RoSPA researched the problems facing novice drivers and launched a new website to educate parents about the need to ensure their children gain as much supervised driving (or riding) experience as possible during their learning period, and that private practice supports their professional lessons. The more private practice a learner takes the more experienced they become and the less likely they are to crash.

Learning About Safety by Experiencing Risk – LASER |
With funding from the Department of Health, RoSPA was tasked to develop the LASER Accreditation Programme. It is widely accepted that LASER is one of the best ways of ensuring young people have an understanding of hazard and risk. A new RoSPA LASER website allows the existing schemes to access the resources needed for accreditation and provides a forum for them to share information on best practice.

Managing Occupational Road Risk |
RoSPA developed and launched ROADTest - the first advanced driving test designed purely for business drivers. Company car and van drivers have accident rates 35 to 50 per cent higher than private drivers. The test is designed to reduce the number of crashes involving people on the road for work purposes as advanced drivers have been shown to be about 25 per cent less likely to crash.

RoSPA Stepped Up Regional Health and Safety Training |

In order to better meet the needs of businesses, 2006 saw a major expansion of RoSPA’s occupational training courses, from national offices in Birmingham and Edinburgh to new regional venues in Bristol, Leeds, Hertfordshire, Manchester and Newcastle.
|
RoSPA Support for New Child Car Seat Laws |
The new law making it compulsory for children to use child car seats or booster seats was welcomed by RoSPA as a positive move for safety. RoSPA’s award winning website received a record number of visits from people seeking to understand the new regulations and gain general safety advice on car seats. RoSPA was also very successful in disseminating the new laws and guidance via sold out briefing events.

Launch of Safety Connections |
Last but not least, 2006 also saw the launch of our weekly e-bulletin, Safety Connections. Circulation has grown to 30,000 subscribers and topics covered to date include:

Support Needed for Lighter Evenings Bill - CURRENT CAMPAIGN |
On January 26, the second reading of the Energy Saving Daylight Bill, proposed by Tim Yeo MP, to allow the UK to adopt Single/Double Summer Time (SDST), will take place. The Bill would give us an extra hour of daylight in the evening.
RoSPA, and many others, have long campaigned for this important move because it would save around 100 lives a year and prevent over 300 serious injuries. Every Autumn when the clocks go back, deaths and injuries on the road increase, especially for the most vulnerable: pedestrians, cyclists and children.
If you support Lighter Evenings, please write to your MP and ask them to help to bring about this life saving Bill by attending the second reading of the Bill on 26 January 2007 to vote for the Bill.
