DIY Top Tips for an Accident Free Easter Break

The Easter Bank Holiday launches the DIY season as people repair their homes after the ravages of winter and renovate rooms for spring and summer. More than 200,000 DIY enthusiasts turn up at hospital each year. To avoid becoming an accident statistic this Easter, follow these simple guidelines:

  • Be realistic and don’t tackle a job unless you really have the
    ability
  • Keep any tools clean and in good repair
  • Always plan ahead to avoid accidents when rushed
  • Stop and disconnect all electrical appliances and tools before
    working on them
  • Ensure that all tools, paint and chemicals are kept safely out of
    the reach of children
  • Take extra care with sharp cutting tools
  • Keep children and pets away when carrying out DIY
  • Keep all products such as paint strippers in their original containers.

Improving Health and Safety in Small Firms

To what extent do the many activities and organisations, designed to assist health and safety management in SME’s, really achieve this objective? This is the key question posed by a new special inquiry led by RoSPA’s National Occupational Safety and Health Committee (NOSHC), to be conducted over the next eighteen months.

Through engaging with interested organisations and individuals the NOSHC inquiry will focus on:

  • Building a unique picture of activity in this area
  • The quality of advice being given to small firms
  • How to avoid unnecessary bureaucracy and duplication
    of effort
  • How to share best practice
  • How to encourage greater collaboration between key
    players
  • Spot missed opportunities

To achieve this project RoSPA is seeking to raise £65,000 and invite your organisation to contribute resources.

For further information on the project contact RoSPA’s Occupational Safety Adviser, Roger Bibbings on 0121 248 2095, alternatively email: rbibbings@rospa.com or visit our website.
