RoSPA celebrates first LASER accreditation

The first safety centre to receive accreditation through a new RoSPA scheme with the Department of Health has been announced. LASER (Learning About Safety by Experiencing Risk) centres help children learn how to cope when faced with dangerous situations.

The awarding of LASER accreditation to the Bristol-based safety centre called Lifeskills – Learning for Living, indicates that it has met the necessary quality standards covering partnership, programme management and evaluation which are set by the LASER scheme.

"LASER schemes provide a powerful interactive approach to safety education and our aim is that they will benefit from a supportive and reassuring accreditation service that will help sustain best practice and further the development of new ways of delivering accident prevention messages,” said RoSPA's LASER Accreditation Manager, John Vallender.

Big dangers - Mini-bikes!

NEW! Under-pressure parents buying mini motorbikes will not always be aware that they may be encouraging their children to break the law and are putting them at risk of severe injury.

Mini Bikes, A Guide for Parents and Owners' RoSPA has produced a startling leaflet called ‘Mini Bikes, A Guide for Parents and Owners’ in order to combat the lack of awareness surrounding the legal and safety issues of mini bikes.

If you advise the public or distribute road safety educational resources to children and their families, then this is a vital addition to your portfolio.

Any powered vehicle used on the public highway must comply with all aspects of road traffic law, including road tax and insurance. This leaflet comprehensively addresses these issues alongside essential safety advice and is available to buy in packs of 100 from the RoSPA WebShop or call 0121 248 2233.

Ensuring competence against PUWER Regulations

How do you ensure that your work equipment meets requirements?

In line with PEnsuring competence against PUWER RegulationsUWER regulations, you must ensure that equipment provided for use at work is, amongst other things, suitable and safe for intended use, maintained in a safe condition, used only by those with adequate information, training, instruction and accompanied by safety measures.

Specifically, part IV of the regulations also contains specific requirements regarding power presses - the machine, guard or associated protection device must be thoroughly examined at specified intervals and inspected daily in use. A competent person must do this.

RoSPA’s long running Power Press Tool Setters course enables delegates to adhere to the standards required by law relating to the use, adjustment and inspection of the power press, as well as covering accident causes and preventative measures.

Also available: Abrasive Wheel Setters and Instructors’ Training

RoSPA’s fully equipped, purpose-built workshop is the home for our suite of skills courses aimed at ensuring your skilled workers are safe workers.
