Christopher Bullock MBE
RoSPA was very sad to hear that Christopher Bullock MBE, Chief Executive of the IAM, passed away suddenly on Monday 19 November 2007.
Christopher had been the IAM's Chief Executive since 1994, and made a substantial contribution to road safety, not just through the work of the IAM but also in his support for, and partnership with, many other road safety organisations, including RoSPA.
Tom Mullarkey, RoSPA Chief Executive, said, “This is very sad and unexpected news. Chris will be remembered for his superb contribution to road safety for over a decade and the many important and long-lasting changes, which he has led the IAM through. All of us at RoSPA would like to extend our condolences to Chris's family and the Trustees and staff of the IAM.'
Before joining the IAM, Christopher had a long career with Shell, and during the 1980s was responsible for Shell's charitable giving - at that time the largest corporate donor in the UK - and for sponsorship of environmental, arts and other community organisations. This included founding Age Resource, which aimed to harness the benefits of an ageing society and is now the 'younger arm' of Age Concern.
Christopher was deservedly awarded the MBE earlier this year. He is survived by his wife and two sons.

2. Director Involvement in Health and Safety course, 13 March 2008 at RoSPA, Birmingham, or at your premises in-company
This training course workshop has been developed to follow attendance at the RoSPA Director’s conference. It will enable you to put theory into practice. It incorporates the new HSE/IoD guidance and provides an opportunity to explore the benefits of a 'beyond compliance' approach at board level.
It is a one-day course and allows organisations to reflect on the importance of health and safety as a corporate governance issue, and the directors' role in delivery. Emphasis is on addressing issues both competently and systematically, and delegates have the opportunity to explore HSE case studies where the 'health and safety equation' has been balanced.
You can choose to attend an open course at RoSPA’s training suite in Birmingham on 13 March, or, if you choose to book the day as an in-company workshop on your own premises, the programme can be tailored to incorporate your own organisation's safety management system documentation and case studies relevant to your industry sector.
For details of the day’s programme visit our website.

New statistics - fatalities on Scotland's roads
Latest figures showing a 10 per cent increase in deaths on Scotland’s roads are a reminder to businesses to ensure they are playing their part in trying to reduce the toll of accidents.
Willie Wills, RoSPA Road Safety Manager for Scotland, said: “It is extremely worrying that 314 people were killed last year - 28 more than in 2005”

The cost of translation
Here at RoSPA we are always looking to develop our services to cater for everyone’s needs. We have identified the demand for some of our posters and products to be translated into other languages, in particular Polish.
Would health and safety posters in Polish suit your organisation?
Health and safety advice and warnings need to be clear and accurate. Incorrect interpretation can be dangerous to employees and those around them.
If translated products would be of benefit to your staff, click here to express your interest.
Calling all water and leisure operators!
The 2008 National Water Safety Congress - 'Education into Information' will be taking place in Bristol on 3rd & 4th March.
This year's event will focus on the need for both adults and children to have effective water safety education and information, enabling them to make informed choices when they are in and around water.
Key presentations will also look at implications of the imminent Corporate Manslaughter legislation for water site operators, and advice on dealing with the aftermath of an accident, in the unfortunate instance of one occurring.
The Congress offers an ever increasing range of learning and networking opportunities, whether your area of involvement is managing beaches, swimming pools, water sports activities or other kinds of water sites, tailored workshop and discussion tracks will allow you to access the safety information most relevant to your organisation.
