Fatalities drive ‘safety culture’ research

Fatalities drive ‘safety culture’ researchFollowing the release of this month’s annual SAFELEC 2010 Progress Report, concerns have been expressed about the progress the electrical sector is making on managing health and safety.

Peter McCormick, Chair of Energy Networks Association's (ENA) Safety Health and Environment Committee and Company-side Chair of the National HESAC said: “2007 was not a good year for health and safety within the electricity networks sector. Tragically there were a number of fatalities to employees of ENA member companies. We will be commissioning independent research to examine the ‘safety culture’ within our sector to understand better why this should happen in spite of the best efforts and resources that we as a sector put into managing safety.”

Human reliability is a significant factor behind more than 85% of accidents, and arguably the greatest challenge to those responsible for ensuring safe places of work.

With this in mind, RoSPA has used its vast experience to develop its Behavioural Safety courses, which provide guidance on introducing a sustainable behavioural safety programme, developing a positive safety culture and troubleshooting existing programmes. By establishing the principal causes of human error and health and safety violations, these innovative courses can play a vital role in realising the vision of an accident and injury free culture.

Next course dates:
Introduction to Behavioural Safety: December 01, 2008
Behavioural Safety – Further Steps: January 08, 2009

Free advice to keep your family safe on holiday

Free advice to keep your family safe on holidayWith the holiday season well and truly upon us, safety near swimming pools and water should be at the forefront of parents' minds when their children are exposed to swimming pools and other potential hazards.

In the UK, the latest drowning statistics available are for 2005 and show the suspected accidental drowning fatalities were 435, of which 39 were children aged 0-14.

Popular questions from parents this time of year are:

  • How can I take children to a swimming pool safely?
  • How can we keep our children safe around swimming pools while on holiday?
  • How can I tell which watersports operators at my holiday destination are safe?

All these questions are answered on RoSPA’s Water and Leisure section.

There are also other various resources freely available online including water and leisure information sheets and R U A Dummy 2? - an educational resource aimed at young people aged 12-16.

Arranging work placements – what do you need to know?

Arranging work placementsMore than 15,000 young people have been seriously injured in work related accidents in the last ten years.

Young workers are particularly prone to accidents in the work place due to their lack of life experience and health and safety training, but help is on hand from RoSPA.

Half a million students go on work placements each year. If your organisation arranges, monitors or administers work experience placements, then the IOSH Work Placement Assessors course could be relevant to you and your colleagues.

This two-day course provides an understanding of the responsibilities of all parties involved in work experience placement, the ability to identify a range of common hazards presented by workplaces and to ensure employers fulfil their health and safety responsibilities to those on work experience placements.

Next course dates: Edinburgh September 24, 2008, Birmingham November 03, 2008.
