National Stress Awareness Day - 5th November
Remember, remember the 5th of November...it’s National Stress Awareness Day!
A certain amount of pressure helps to motivate people, and is part of every job. However, excessive pressure can lead to stress, which in turn can cause ill-health and lost time for businesses.
Work-related stress accounts for over a third of all new incidences of ill-health, and each case of work-related stress, depression or anxiety leads to an average of 30.2 working days lost each year! As well as reducing sickness absence, tackling stress at work can have many other benefits, including happier and more motivated employees, lower staff turnover and greater customer satisfaction.
RoSPA can help you to tackle this damaging issue by sending its knowledgeable trainers into your organisation to deliver a one-day Managing Stress and Violence course in-company.
Please visit our website for more information on how we can tailor our courses to your needs.
In addition, a RoSPA consultant can carry out an audit of your organisation’s stress-related policies and procedures, and the degree to which these are adhered to. This can be a stand-alone audit, or incorporated into RoSPA’s flagship Quality Safety Audit. The consultant will provide a detailed report, including prioritised future actions. Alternatively, a specific managing stress question set is available for just £250 as part of RoSPA’s Audit Answer software.
Start reducing workplace stress today!
RoSPA is offering 20% off all stress-related resources:

Home Safety - 2008 Congress preview
RoSPA’s National Home Safety Congress in Blackpool this month (11 -12 November) will discuss whether our homes can – or should – be made as safe as possible.
More people die and are injured in accidents in the home than in any other setting, with more than 4,000 people losing their lives in this way in the UK in 2006.
The Congress will consider the extent to which regulation is appropriate for tackling home accidents, with speakers and delegates exploring how a balance can be achieved between complacency and paranoia about hazards in the home, and whether the home environment should be “as safe as necessary” or “as safe as possible”.
In his keynote address, Lord Jordan of Bournville, RoSPA Vice-President, will outline regulatory successes in home safety, such as product safety developments and the installation of devices to prevent bath water scalds in new properties in Scotland.
Sheila Merrill, RoSPA Home Safety Manager for England, said:
“More people are killed and injured in accidents in their homes than anywhere else. But, even though these cases can have life-changing consequences, they often go unreported publicly because they happen behind closed doors." Read more...
Delegates at the conference, which is sponsored by Safe-T-Light, will include representatives of the health and emergency services, housing associations and safety product manufacturers.
Visit our website for full the full event programme and details of delegate packages.

Asbestos - The hidden killer
Every week, 20 tradesmen die from asbestos-related diseases, and this figure is on the increase. The Health and Safety Executive has launched a new campaign running throughout November to highlight the dangers asbestos poses to today’s tradesmen.
Exposure to asbestos is the biggest single cause of work-related deaths – and yet many workers (particularly tradesmen) do not think that they are personally at risk. Because the use of asbestos was banned many years ago, many workers believe that the problem has been dealt with and that this issue is not relevant to them: they could not be more wrong.
Asbestos may be present in any building constructed or refurbished before 2000, and any work which may disturb asbestos fibres – for example drilling or cutting – poses a severe danger.
Information about how to deal with asbestos, and the dangers surrounding it, can be found on the HSE’s website.
RoSPA can provide in-company training in the form of an Asbestos Awareness course; or one of our knowledgeable consultants can advise on policy and procedure relating to asbestos and the law.
