RoSPA’s new President – Lord Jordan of Bournville
Lord Jordan of Bournville, CBE, has taken up office as the new President of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents.
Lord Jordan has throughout his career promoted awareness of safety issues, and currently helps RoSPA to keep safety and accident prevention at the forefront of the public policy agenda.
He was elected at the Society's annual meeting in Birmingham on November 7, 2008 and succeeds Baroness Gibson of Market Rasen, who held the post for four years. Before taking up his new role, he was RoSPA's Deputy President.
Lord Jordan said: "I am honoured to accept this position at RoSPA. And it is a privilege to serve an organisation and cause that does so much to protect the lives of people in this country.
More information on Lord Jordan and his appointment can be found on RoSPA’s press pages.
Also at the AGM, Tom Mullarkey, Chief Executive of RoSPA, addressed attendees to reaffirm RoSPA’s mission and said people need to be given the correct information so that they can decide for themselves what risks they want to take.
He said a quest for “absolute safety” was not feasible and would come at a cost to freedom.
Full details on Tom Mullarkey's report can be viewed on our website.

Consequences of inadequate training - In people handling
The area of people handling is a vital one where safety is concerned – not only to preserve the comfort and dignity of those with restricted mobility, but also to prevent injury and even death. A case was brought earlier this month after a resident of a care home suffered a fall while being moved using a sling and a hoist. The man received fractures to his hip and elbow as a result of the fall in February 2007, and later died of sepsis from his wounds. At an inquest, a coroner highlighted the fall as a contributing factor to his death. After pleading guilty to a health and safety breach, the care home was ordered to pay a total of £12,476 in fines and costs.
According to the Health and Safety Executive, an inadequately-trained employee of the care home had failed to attach the sling to the hoist properly, leading
to the fall.
This is an extreme example, but it serves to illustrate how serious the consequences can be when there is a lack of proper training – particularly when it comes to the moving and handling of people.
RoSPA can help you to ensure that your employees are as highly trained as possible when it comes to safer people handling – our suite of safer people handling courses has been specially developed for those employed in this specialist field. A member of staff who is a certified safer people handling trainer, for example, will contribute to clinical and corporate governance standards and excellence in people-centred care throughout the workplace.
Take a look at our resources – Health and Safety in Care Homes and Handling Home Care are two publications aimed specifically at those who are charged with moving people in a care setting. At less than £10 each, can you afford not to take a look?

In the news - RoSPA’s advice services tested
RoSPA’s customer service and ability to advise instantly over the telephone has been examined this month
(Nov 5) in the leading magazine, Marketing.
RoSPA was featured in Marketing’s ‘We’ll call you’ section, which aims to spot check companies for customer service standards. On Bonfire Night, Marketing called our Birmingham head office for advice on DIY firework displays when young children are around, to very satisfying results.
The verdict?
Marketing reported: “The call handler was well informed...he asked the ages of my children and tailored the advice...his advice reassured me about safely buying fireworks and handling a display...8/10”
RoSPA takes pride in satisfying the needs of anyone calling the society, be it customers, public or organisations that need support. RoSPA’s unique Infocentre is on hand and offers an extensive service, currently answering around 400 health and safety related questions every month.

RoSPA’s Young Drivers at Work Project – Still time to contribute
The questionnaire for RoSPA’s Young Drivers at Work Project is still open.
We want to hear the views of people responsible for employing and managing young drivers (17-24). The questionnaire looks at how well you feel that the current system of driver training and testing prepares young drivers for at-work driving, and what would help you manage the risks to them.
Whether you have just a few young drivers who make occasional deliveries, or many young staff who spend much of their time driving as part of their job, we’re looking to hear your views and experiences.
You can find more information about the questionnaire on the RoSPA website.

Online petition – Your role in saving lives
You have just a few weeks to add your support to a petition for lighter evenings all year round, which closes on January 3.
The online petition has been set up to ask the Prime Minister to consider a change to the current system of timekeeping in Britain (Greenwich Mean Time/British Summer Time), which is in support of RoSPA's campaign to reduce accidents.
RoSPA is encouraging its members and associates to support the campaign by registering online. The safety charity wants the Government to agree to a three-year trial to prove the road safety benefits of always being ahead of GMT - by an hour in the winter and two hours in the summer.
Research has shown that 450 fewer deaths and serious injuries each year, including between 104 and 138 fewer deaths, could result from such a time shift.
Together we can campaign to make better use of the limited daylight we receive, and also reduce accidents and deaths on our roads.
To play your part in saving lives – visit the petition and register your name!

Control of Substances Hazardous to Health - COSHH advice
Does your organisation use chemicals, adhesives, paints, cleaning agents, or generate smoke, dust or other vapours during its work activities?
The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations 2002 requires employers to assess and control exposure to hazardous substances to prevent ill-health.
Who should do the assessment?
Legal responsibility for the assessment falls to employers, but others can do some or even most of the work of preparing it. However, whoever carries out the assessment will need to:
- Have access to and understand the COSHH Regulations and relevant Approved Codes of Practice or to someone else who does
- Be able to get all the necessary information and have the knowledge and experience to make correct
decisions about the risks and actions needed
If you are actively involved in compliance with COSHH, you may be interested in RoSPA’s one day
The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health course, running in Edinburgh on December 9, 2008. Further courses are available in Birmingham in January 09.
Also running in Edinburgh on December 15, 2009 is RoSPA’s one day Accident Investigation course.
